Stunning camera spec
The images you can get from your smart phone's camera are largely dependent on its sensors and Google has been much praised for the quality of its new camera which has scored more highly than the iPhone 7 and achieved the highest score ever awarded to a smart phone camera. The 12.3MP camera gives crisp, sharp pictures in any light. There’s phase detection and laser detection autofocus, and 4K video is available. And of course, a front camera of course, with 8MP.
The Pixel gives you video calling with friends on both the Android and IOS operating systems.
Brilliant display and Daydream virtual reality
There’s a superb AMOLED display with 16.7 million colours, giving a truly cinematic viewing experience – Google must have had its virtual reality push in mind when putting this phone together.
Daydream is a whole new departure from Google's previous efforts with virtual reality. It uses the full functionality of the phone’s Android Nougat 7.1 operating system to deliver a completely new virtual reality experience.
You'll need to buy a Daydream View VR Headset to enjoy this but it looks as though a whole new world of immersive gaming is on its way. Daydream has clearly also got huge potential when teamed with other Google apps such as Google Earth.
If the thought of all that keeps you awake at night, the Pixel has a great little feature called Night Light which allows you to change the screen display to a less blue-focused light to help you sleep.
Smart storage and security
Storage is unlimited and you can use Google Assistant to carry out smart retrieval of your photos and data. Assistant can also carry out tasks in some Google apps with big plans for Assistant to start featuring in third part apps.
Pixel Imprint is a fingerprint sensor and a quick swipe down will allow you to unlock your phone quickly but securely.
Operating functions, memory and battery
The battery life is great with a standby time of anything up to 19 days and talk time of about 26 hours. If you're using the Internet, you’re probably looking at about 13 hours and the same for video playback whereas for audio, the Pixel can deliver 110 hours. The charging time is good too – a 15 minute charge will give you up to 7 hours of use.
Memory is 4 GB but of course you also have unlimited storage. There's a 3.5 mm headset jack, single SIM slot and USB port. Wi-Fi 802.11, Bluetooth 4.2 and GPS are all included.
With an aerospace-grade seamless aluminium and glass body the phone looks great, and is available in black or silver.
